OData, short for Open Data Protocol, is a protocol for the querying and updating of data. It provides a uniform way to describe both the data and the data model, and considered to be a flexible technology for enabling interoperability between different data sources.
The combination of DataRails and OData allows you to consolidate and shape data sources to match your data analysis requirements or prepare it for further analysis and modeling by tools such as Power Pivot and Power View.
Here is how to connect to an OData table from a DataRails database:
In Excel 2010/2013:
If the Power Query add-in is not yet installed on your Excel, download it here.
In the Power Query (1) ribbon tab, select From Other Source (2) > From OData Feed (3).
In Excel 2016:
In the Data (1) ribbon tab, select New Query (2) > From Other Source (3)> From OData Feed (4).
In the OData Feed dialog box, enter the following URL: https://app.datarails.com/api/templates/OData.svc and click OK.
Select Basic, fill-in your DataRails username and password, click Connect.
In the Navigator, you can see the list of tables for you to select incorporate into your query. Check the Select multiple items checkbox to consolidate a few tables into one merged data set.
Use the Query Editor to organize and manipulate the data according to your preferences and click Close & Load once you're done.
The consolidated and modified data will then be loaded. It will appear in a table format as shown below. The query can easily be refreshed with updated data for real time analysis.
