The first version of Flex for Mac, the Datarails Excel Add-in, launched in January 2023, marking the introduction of Datarails compatibility with macOS.
Although the functionalities are still evolving, Flex for Mac allows you to refresh reports, view up-to-date data, and submit updated numbers back to Datarails. You can slice and dice your data by changing filters and use our data drill-down capabilities to discover new insights that drive the business forward.
The following features, currently available in Flex for Windows, will be incorporated into Flex for Mac in future updates:
- Adding new tables, lists, or functions
- Rolling forward data
- Publishing to dashboards or PowerPoint
- Utilizing the Formula Builder
Pre-requisites
- Operating System: macOS
- Excel Version: 2010 or higher
- Permissions: Administrator rights recommended for installation

Install Flex for Mac
Via Excel
The Excel Add-ins search results are region-based, meaning that the search results are affected by your current location:
- UK-based users search result - "Datarails Flex UK"
- CA-based users search result - "Datarails Flex CA"
- Any other but UK and CA search result - "Datarails Flex"
In case your location and your data center are not the same, please install Flex using Microsoft online marketplace.
Follow these steps to install Flex for Mac:
- Go to the Excel ribbon and click 'Insert' and 'Get my add-ins'.
- Search for "Datarails."
- Click Add.
- The Flex add-in will appear under the Home tab. Click on My Add-ins to add/remove Flex for Mac.
Via Microsoft online marketplace
- Navigate to the Microsoft online app source marketplace.
- Log in to your Microsoft account.
Search for “Datarails Flex.” - Select the relevant data center and click "Get it now."
Capabilities and Functionalities
Main Screen
- Click on "Datarails" to return to the main screen.
- Refresh your file Filebox.
- Use the “i” icon for additional info like Date Tag, Date Picker, and Excel report details.
- Submit changes to save them to the Datarails cloud.

Filters, Tables and Dynamic Ranges
- Table Filter: Users can modify their selection within the table.
- Global Filters: Users can adjust global filter selections.
- Datarails Tables: Tables will automatically refresh with the latest data when the file is refreshed.
- Dynamic Ranges: Dynamic ranges will also update with new data upon file refresh.
Drilldown Options
- Drill-down List: Allows users to explore the underlying data in detail.
- Drill-down by Field: Summarizes the drill-down data based on specific fields.
- Drill-down Favorites: Enables users to access previously saved drill-down views, if any have been created.
- Delete Drill Tabs: Removes all existing drill-down tabs.
Troubleshooting
Dr functions show zeros
Ensure that the report was submitted to the Filebox using the Windows add-in version 1.3.6 or higher. If not, return to Windows, update your add-in to the latest version, refresh the file, and submit it again. Then, open the report on your Mac and check the results.
Dr functions show #BUSY
This issue may occur due to a conflict between the Mac and Windows versions of the add-in, as both cannot be installed simultaneously. Confirm that only one version of the add-in is installed. If both are present, remove one and try refreshing the report again. For instructions on how to remove the add-in from your desktop, please refer to the GIF below.
