In Datarails, the "Drill Down By" feature allows users to dive deeper into their data by selecting specific data points and breaking them down using different filters and dimensions. This functionality is a core feature of the Datarails dashboard and empowers users to explore their data interactively.
Access Drill Down By Option
The "Drill Down By" feature can be accessed from any widget in the dashboard. To begin:
- Select any data point within a widget.
- Click on the data point, and a menu will appear.
- Hover over the "Drill Down By" option.
In the Drill Down By menu, two main option will appear:
- Create New Drill Down By View: This allows users to set new parameters for data exploration.
- Review Preconfigured Views: Users can also select preconfigured views either created by themselves or shared by the dashboard owner.
Create a New Drill Down By View
- Select the "Create New Drill Down By View" option.
- The dashboard editor will open, displaying the values and filters associated with the chosen data point.
- You can now add fields to visualize the data. For instance, adding a date field to the axis will visualize the data for the selected month.
Customize Visualizations
Users can select from various visualization types, including:
- Line charts
- Column charts
- Bar charts
- Table view (original option)
This flexibility allows users to choose the visualization method that best fits their analysis and highlights the insights they wish to display.
Name and Save the Drill Down View
After setting up your preferred visualization:
- Add additional data fields if needed (e.g., adding "Department" to see which departments contribute to income).
- Name the drill down (e.g., "Drill Down By Income").
- Save the view by confirming the name. The system will store this drill down in the available menu.
Manage Drill Down Views
Once saved, your new drill down will appear in the "Drill Down By" menu, where you can:
- View: Display the selected drill down alongside the original widget.
- Edit: Open the widget editor to adjust parameters.
- Delete: Remove the drill down view if no longer needed.
Side-by-Side Visualization
The "Drill Down By" feature allows users to see their drill down view side by side with the original widget, enabling quick comparison and deeper insights.
- On the left: The original widget (e.g., rolling income).
- On the right: The selected drill down view (e.g., Drill Down By Income). You can switch between various drill down views as needed, and the data and visualizations will update accordingly.
Explore Multiple Layers
For users who need deeper insights, the drill down feature supports multiple levels of data. You can drill down further into different data points, and the visualizations will update on the fly, allowing for flexible and dynamic analysis.
Save and Export Data
Users can export their drill down views as PNG files, which can be used in presentations or reports. Simply:
- Select the data point or drill down view you want to export.
- Save the PNG to your device for use in other applications.
Edit or Cancel Changes
If you wish to modify a drill down view, select "Edit" to open the widget editor. If no changes are needed, click "Cancel" to discard any edits.
Unsupported Data Points
If a data point is not supported for the "Drill Down By" functionality, the option will be disabled. This ensures users only interact with valid data points for drill down. Unsupported data points include:
- Calculated values
- Values defined as 'Others' in top analysis
- Widgets with multiple fields in the value section
- Variance, Average, and Trend Series
- Published range, items and tables
